Halo Reach Review (Xbox 360)

HALO ODST was Halo 3 with a new story but almost the exact same gameplay. Bungie seems to have taken it upon themselves to up the ante in this iteration of the franchise.

Single Player

There is of course a single player campaign as always. This time it chronicles the fall of Reach as the Covenant attack the planet looking for something. We al know what that something is as we’ve already been to Reach. In the single player campaign you take on the role of Noble Six, a rookie Spartan who just joined his team. you are given a series of missions (ten in all) that you need to complete in order to help...well, I won’t ruin that part for you.

The campaign is short. I would say 4-6 hours short, but it was definitely interesting. It takes you through a variety of locations and gives you ample variation in gameplay. It’s not just the standard run-and-gun and yet it is, as that is what HALO is all about. But there are also some vehicle-centric levels and some flight levels. It made for a more interesting mix than the previous games. ODST let you drive a tank through the city which was cool. Reach let’s you do, something else entirely.

All in all, the gameplay is classic HALO with some new additions and twists.

Firefight also makes its return giving you eight missions to complete. But on top of that there are seven variants of the mode including:

  • Firefight and Firefight Classic
  • Generation Defense - Defend the generators and fight off the attack
  • Gruntpocalypse - All Grunts, all the time.
  • Rocketfight - You a rocket launcher and loads of enemies. Gib away!
  • Score Attack - Score as much as you can in one round.
  • Versus - Take turns as Spartan and Elite

Overall they’re interesting and fun. The variants are nice to see and some are more challenging than others of course. There’s certainly something you’ll enjoy here, if you’re a Halo fan.

Our Rating for Halo Reach Review (Xbox 360)
9.0 Replay
Lots of options, modes, maps and variants to play with. Just find some friends which make it more fun. Of course, you need all that when the story is so short (5-8 hours).
9.0 Graphics
Noticeably better than some other games in the series.
9.0 Sound
The same high quality that we’ve come to expect all around from the franchise.
8.5 Gameplay
I don’t know if they changed something or if I’ve changed but it sure seems more fun this time round. The campaign mode needs to be longer. 10 missions isn’t all that lengthy for the amount of time they worked on this.
8.5 Multiplayer/Online Content
Some modes are lackluster and seem hastily thrown in (Race for example seems incomplete). But still a whole lot of ways to play with friends local and online.
9.0 Overall
Reach brings Halo a GDN Gold award this time round, topping ODST (which got a Silver). It just seems like they finally took some extra time to make the game better instead of rehashing what came before. It’s different, but still Halo.
