Sony has told a trade show in Berlin that 3D TV will be ’in every home’ by the end of 2010, adding that the PlayStation 3 will be key in promoting the technology.

The firm told the audience at the IFA technology trade show that the console will be fully compatible with a new range of 3D TVs it plans to launch next year.

British newspaper The Telegraph reports that Sony’s chief executive Sir Howard Stringer said 3D will become mass market.

"Today, 3D is clearly on its way to the mass market,” Mr Stringer told a press conference.

"As with high definition a few years back, there are a variety of issues yet to be addressed.

“But the 3D train is on the track, and we at Sony are ready to drive it home."

UK trade paper MCV revealed that industry insiders have told it that Sony is already working on 3D videogames: "Sony has already overseen the internal development of 3D games – but are holding off from announcing them until an industry 3D standard has become apparent."
