PS3 to Get 3D Blu-Ray Playback Support

It was announced at the Tokyo Game Show SCEI SCEJ media briefingpress press conference that PlayStation 3 will support 3D Blu-ray Disc playback from 21 September 2010, through system software update 3.50, allowing you to watch movies in stereoscopic 3D.

PlayStation 3 already supports stereoscopic 3D gaming, with games such as MotorStorm 3D Rift, WipEout HD and SuperStardust HD available now and upcoming titles such as Killzone 3 and MotorStorm Apocalypse set to take advantage of this immersive new technology. 3D Blu-ray 3D Disc playback, in addition to stereoscopic 3D gaming and stereoscopic photo support will deliver users a total 3D package for PS3 owners.

This seems to be the major division coming to the consoles. Now that they all have some sort of motion control (with or without controller), Sony is drawing a line in the sand saying "you can’t touch this" and offering both Blu-Ray and now 3D. The Xbox 360 and Wii will be hard pressed to cover that gap and probably never will. At least not in this generation.
