The NPD Group November Game Sales Report – Xbox 360, Black Op Tops

Xbox led all console sales for the sixth month running with 1.37 million units sold.  It also accounted for a major chunk of game sales overall according to the NPD Group.

"The 360 platform accounted for over 40% of total industry sales driven by the successful launch of Microsoft’s Kinect. Xbox 360 accessories accounted for 60% of that categories’ dollar sales this month," said NPD analyst, Anita Frazier.

November 2010 topped 2009 and even cleared 2008, "November sales represent the best November on record in terms of new physical retail sales. It bests November 2008 by roughly $30 million, and that time frame was at the height of the music/dance genre sales."

How good was the month for gaming? So good that it canceled out much of the losses from earlier in the year and might even be enough to push sales up to the same place they were last year.

In regards to alternate sales methods (digital distribution, used, mobile)

"Remember that this data set represents new physical retail sales only. We have begun to report on sales realized through other channels such as used game sales, digital distribution and mobile apps among others. In the first half of 2010, new physical retail sales at the total industry level accounted for approximately 70% of the total consumer spend against the industry, and while that is likely to change when full year results are tabulated, it gives some context with which to evaluate the portion that new physical retail sales represents."

So physical sales are still the lion’s share of yearly game sales. Of course hardware is more expensive and so in terms of dollars per unit will always have a much higher ratio. It would be interesting to see the NPD Group break down sales of games physical versus digital.

On the games end of things the top ten shook out like this:

Top 10 Games (New Physical Retail only; across all platforms incl. PC)

**Call of Duty: Black Ops (360, PS3, Wii, PC, NDS)

9 TAKE 2 INTERACTIVE

Block Ops not only took the month but also accounted for 25% of all software units sold for the month.

"Black Ops debuted as the best-selling game in its launch month (in history) with black ops selling 8.4 million units at retail in the U.S. With only one month of sales, it has become the 7th best-selling game of all time, life-to-date."

Music and dance games made a comeback (who said Harmonix must die?), though admittedly it’s because of two dance titles Just Dance 2 and Dance Central.

So if sales for the industry reach around $19.6B it will show a healthy year overall for gaming as that was the mark set last year. It would mean that the industry stopped its decline, most likely due to launches like Microsoft Xbox 360 Kinect, Playstation Move and games like Black Ops, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood and Dance Central.
