Guitar Hero is Dead, Shelved by Activision with True Crime: Hong Kong

Guitar hero has been put into the vault and production halted after Activision cited continued decline in the music genre.

Perhaps it’s all due to Activision’s lack of understanding what gamers want in a music genre game.

In the Activision earnings conference call they said:

"We are closing Activision Publishing’s Guitar Hero business unit and will discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011."

"The company also will stop development on True Crime: Hong Kong. These decisions are based on the desire to focus on the greatest opportunities that the company currently has to create the world’s best interactive entertainment experiences.

The NeverSoft Blog post about it included:

Does this mean you’re no longer making Guitar (and/or DJ) Hero games?
Over the past two years, we have seen rapid declines in the music genre, and unfortunately, based on current demand, we simply cannot continue to profitably make these games given the considerable licensing and manufacturing costs.

Are you still going to make new DLC for Guitar/DJ Hero?
We will release the previously announced DLC track and mix packs for February, but - unfortunately - we will not be able to release new DLC packs beyond what we already have.

Does this mean you’re never going to make another Guitar/DJ Hero game? Or just not this year?
We can never say never, but over the past two years we have seen rapid declines in the music genre, and unfortunately, based on current demand, we simply cannot continue to profitably make these games given the considerable licensing and manufacturing costs.

Personally, I never liked Guitar Hero as much as Rock Band so I’m not torn up over this. But it is depressing to see a studio have its livelihood taken from them. Neversoft will press on though I’m sure.

True Crime: Hong Kong, which was in development, has also been canceled. United Front Games was working on the project for over a year.

Special Announcements:
TRUE CRIME:  We are sorry we did not get a chance to complete this project with Activision, but we understand why.  We are both committed to doing quality games and nothing less.  Maybe we will have a chance to work together in the future, but in the meantime we are setting our creative sights on a different horizon.  You can keep up with the latest developments at UFG here on our site.

United Front Games will certainly carry on. They have Modnation Racers which they are still supporting and they look to be moving on to new projects:

United Front Games is a specialized, Vancouver based game development studio currently creating two entirely original games for the Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 consoles.  Together, we craft the finest entertainment experiences possible while, nurturing creativity, and growing as people.

Good luck to all involved. It’s a shame when a project gets canceled so far into the development cycle because the publisher can’t manage their own affairs.
