NVIDIA announced that the a new set of beta GeForce R304 drivers which add support for NVIDIA TXAA, CG quality antialiasing for games has been released.

These drivers also unify Windows 7 and Windows 8 support into a single driver and for the first time support all Windows operating systems from Windows XP to Windows 8, representing over 10 years of Windows releases.

New & Updated SLI Profiles

The new GeForce 304.79 beta drivers also introduce a Secret World SLI profile, maximizing frame rates on multi-GPU systems. Furthermore, profiles for other top titles are also included:

  • End of Nations
  • Nexuiz (released at an earlier date via NVIDIA Update)
  • Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Future Soldier (released at an earlier date via NVIDIA Update)
  • Tornado Force
  • Tribes: Ascend (updated)

Resolved Issues

The new driver resolves many of the issues reported by users of our previous GeForce 304.48 beta drivers, such as systems rebooting instead of shutting down. The key fixes are as follows, with the complete list of Windows 7 and Windows 8 changes available to peruse in the driver notes, here.

  • Fixed a compatibility issue with Civilization V and GeForce 400/500 series GPUs.
  • Fixed instances of flickering or missing mouse cursor when hardware cursor is enabled (reported with Aion, World of Warcraft, Eve Online and others).
  • Fixed an issue that caused a PC reboot instead of a PC shut down.
  • Fixed an issue that led to a black screen after driver installation.

The Secret World and TXAA

The first title to support TXAA is Funcom’s The Secret World, the most graphically advanced MMO to date. Following an upcoming game update, all GeForce GTX 600-Series users who have the new GeForce 304.79 beta drivers installed will be able to take immediate advantage of the fidelity-enhancing anti-aliasing technique to make Funcom’s fantastic-looking MMORPG look even better.

TXAA Anti-Aliasing: Even Higher Quality Than MSAA & FXAA

Film studios making CG movies spend considerable computing resources on anti-aliasing, ensuring that the audience isn’t distracted by unrealistic, jagged lines. For games to approach this level of fidelity developers require new anti-aliasing techniques that reduce not only aliased lines, but aliased shimmering, also, without comprising performance.

To facilitate this advancement in fidelity, NVIDIA has designed an even higher-quality anti-aliasing mode called TXAA, which is designed for direct integration into game engines. Combining the raw power of MSAA with sophisticated resolve filters, similar to those employed in CG films, TXAA produces a smoother image, far in advance of any comparable technique. In addition, TXAA can also jitter sample the entire scene between frames to reduce shimmering, known technically as temporal aliasing.

At present, TXAA is available in two varieties: TXAA 2x, and TXAA 4x. TXAA 2x offers visual fidelity on par with 8xMSAA, with performance similar to 2xMSAA, while TXAA 4x offers image fidelity superior to 8xMSAA, with a performance impact comparable to 4xMSAA.
