Electronic Arts, Inc. (NASDAQ:EA) Gives the Boot to More Employees

The staff reduction at Electronic Arts, Inc. (NASDAQ:EA) shows no signs of slowing down. The company is shrinking its employee ranks due to a shift of priorities in 'new technologies and mobile'.

The layoffs will include developers PopCap, makers of what could easily be the most popular among casual match-three games – Bejeweled, as well as Quicklime Games, developers of Need for Speed: World. Kotaku reported a rough estimation of the job cuts would be 10% of EA's workforce. No official numbers and percentages have been provided by the company.

Respawn Entertainment, founded by Vince Zampella and Jason West of former Infinity Ward fame, where they worked on some of the most loved installments of the Call of Duty franchise before jumping ship and switching Activision Blizzard, Inc. (NASDAQ:ATVI) for EA, informed they were 'just fine' through a Twitter post.[banner]

An internal EA memo regarding the layoffs leaked by TechCrunch delivers the obligatory 'thank-yous' in a robotic tone, before wrapping up with “EA is a great company, with talented and hard-working teams, a strong portfolio of products and an extremely bright future.”

Such statements come through as particularly out of place at a time like this. The company has recently been awarded the 'Golden Poo' by a large consumer web poll for being the Worst Company in America, has had its CEO resign and admit his personal responsibility for EA's failure to meet financial expectations and has massively botched the launch of its new SimCity game.

The SimCity fiasco is obviously still unresolved as this week's patch fixed certain issues but reportedly injected a bucketload of new bugs into the game. Some of the items on a bug report list posted on Reddit are admittedly quite hilarious.

EA stock is currently hovering at $18.02 per share, or 0.45% up in early trading.
