PlayStation 4 has sold over 7 million units worldwide. This is great news for the company. However, due to high demand for the console, Sony is having some problems with supplying it.

PlayStation 4 hit the 7 million mark on April 6, which means it made one million sales in the last month or so. Five months after its release, this is a sure sign that sales are still going strong. The console is can now be bought in 72 countries.

"Although we are still facing difficulties keeping up with the strong demand worldwide, we remain steadfast in our commitment to meet the needs of our customers,” said Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment.

An SCE spokesperson in Tokyo refused to give more detail on the matter. He was quite concise, only saying PS4 is currently, although temporarily, short on supply because of the high demand.

Japan's major retailers received a fresh shipment of PlayStation 4 units last Thursday. The console was made available for the Land of the Rising Sun.

The high demand for PS4 has been consistent since it launched. When it was initially released in November 2013, it sold a million units in the US and Canada on its first day alone. In January, GameStop even had to issue a press release when it received new units of the console.

SCE president Andrew House said he expects the supply situation to last until summer. He stated this for The Wall Street Journal in March.

The recent statements that SCE has released say that, as of April 13, over 20,5 million games gave been sold for PlayStation 4. Also, Sony aims at releasing 120 titles for its new console in 2014.

PlayStation 4 has outsold its biggest rival, Xbox One, in 2013. Both consoles were released in November of last year. The Microsoft console was originally a whopping $100 more expensive than the $399 PS4. However, due to the variety of bundled purchases that Xbox One offers, in some instances, it can rival PlayStation 4's price, and even beat it.
