EA, maker of such games as Madden, The Sims and Battlefield 2142, has signed an advertising deal to include updatable advertising in their games. Oddly enough the news didn't show up on their site, maybe they don't want to make big waves on it.

What's this mean for the Gamers? Well it means they'll be watching what your playing for one thing because the games will update the advertising based on what you are doing, using your network connection for your Xbox 360 or other online console.

It probably doesn't mean lower prices on new games. Because I doubt they would pass the buck on to the gamers who support them. But I could be wrong, it's been known to happen on occasion. Maybe they will take the money from the ads and use it to pay development costs which could then feasibly be seen in the form of a lower average new game pricetag. But I really doubt it. Some game companies like to bemoan the facts about how much it takes to make a video game and the time, energy and most importantly for them the money. With the advent of DVD based games many companies feel that they need to fill up that 4.7GB or more with something, even if it doesn't actually benefit the gameplay or the gamer. Now I'm not saying they don't put a lot of time, effort and money into the games they make. I know they do, hell I put hours into making a tutorial based level in the Oblivion Construction Set. I can safely say I know they have hundreds perhaps even thousands of manhours into the games they make.

But did they ever bother to ask us about what we want in a game? Maybe if they made games that were more specifically targeted they might not have to waste so much money and effort on making games that we really don't want. How's that for a cost-cutting measure? Make games that gamers want with features the gamers want.

Now don't get me wrong, I do like a lot of EA games. But, as all companies do, they often think they know what the consumers want without ever bothering to ask the consumers. How does one implement a gamer demand led strategy for game development without getting bogged down by the astronomical amount of suggestions that would follow?

Hell if I knew that I would be a rich man already.
