The PlayStation 3 was released this morning at thousands of stores across the United States, mostly without incident. But Sony ultimately released even less than the expected 400,000 it had originally announced, which caused tensions to run a bit high in some locations.

At a Wal-Mart in Putnam, Connecticut, two teens, one armed with a pistol and wearing a ski mask, the other with a shotgun, threatened a line of 15 to 20 people around 3am Friday morning, demanding money. The pair shot one person who refused to hand over his money.

According to a spokesman for the state police, the thugs fled the scene and the victim was taken to University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester. The police are still searching for the suspects.

Other places had minor problems. A Palmdale, California Super Wal-Mart was shutdown late Wednesday by authorities after shoppers got "rowdy". Closer to my home, in West Bend, Wisconsin, a 19-year-old idiot was injured when he ran into a pole running to be one of the first 10 spots outside the Super Wal-Mart there. A drive-by shooting with a BB gun occurred at a Best Buy in Lexington, Kentucky. At another Best Buy in Boston, employees gave out tickets to the first 140 people in line (the number of consoles available) everyone could go home.

As for me, I hit nearly every store in a 50 mile radius, and spoke to a number of nice people. Every unit was spoken for. One guy in the Dousman area offered his ticket for a guaranteed 60GB PS3 at a Toys R Us this morning for $1200, adding he would consider $1000 for it. After see this, I wish I would have taken him up on it. Next time, I'm camping out.
