championship gamingThe time has come for the Championship Gaming Series to begin, tonight live on DirecTV channel The 101 at 7:00PM PST. The show will consist of live, sports-style TV coverage of its North American league season. The action will be carried in more than 16 million households, as the world’s top pro gamers do battle on live national television.

Its North American league. So that means they expect to branch out to other continents in the future. They are already holding qualifiers in the other regions, so if you have got game then get in the game and check out their site .

The website shows they expect to have teams competing from around the globe which they have broken up into seven regions, North America, Latin America, Uk, Europe, Africe/Middle East, Asia and Australia.

Six teams comprise North America (CGS Region 1): Carolina Core, Chicago Chimera, Dallas Venom, L.A. compLexity, New York 3D, San Francisco OptX. Each team competes in four events:

  • Counter-Strike: Source
  • Dead or Alive 4
  • Project Gotham Racing 3
  • FIFA 07

The show will feature:

  • Passionate head-to-head live gaming action in an enormous gaming arena
  • Sound bites from players and General Managers
  • Team logos and league standings
  • Interviews with executives and players available by request, including:

CGS Commissioner Andy Reif, former Chief Operating Officer of the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour, Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel, the world’s most famous PC gamer, a 12-time World Champion and the league’s exclusive play-by-play commentator.

The series will air two, 2-hour weekly shows on The 101 through July. Emmy Award-winning sports producer Mike Burks takes the helm of CGS television coverage, applying his expertise in sports to capture the thrilling atmosphere and non-stop action of CGS league events. CGS coverage will also feature behind the scenes and background segments on each of the six teams and several of the 60 players during league telecasts.

Personally I don't know how thrilling it will be but if they go the route of the recent ESPN coverage of the Hot Dog Eating Contest or the upcoming Rock Paper Scissors Championships (I am not making this up)  perhaps the players will also be tagged as 'true American Heroes,' as was said about the hot dog contestants. Let' just hope, for the sake of gaming and gamers around the world, that they do it right.
