"My name is Reggie and I am happy."  This is how Reggie Fils-Aime, the President and Chief Operating Officer of Nintendo of America, began his keynote speech at E3 today.  He continued  for a few minutes, giving stats regarding the gaming industry's growth.  Some of the stats Reggie highlighted:

  • 69% of game industry growth is from Nintendo
  • 1/3 of all Wiis owners are female, and only 1/5 of all other system owners are female
  • Over 40 million DS units have been sold
  • 100 new Wii games coming over the next year
  • 140 DS games coming next year
  • 5.6 million Virtual Console game downloads

Reggie continued with possibly the most prolific statement of E3 so far, and what I believe should be Nintendo's new motto: "Everyone's a gamer."

The Wii Zapper was also announced.  This is a peripheral I have been waiting for since launch, and it's very cool.  It appears to be a holder for the Wii Remote and Nunchuck.  The Wii Remote becomes the barrel and the Nunchuck becomes the pistol grip or stock.  It is a two-handed device, and will sell of a MSRP of $19.99 (USD) and may come bundled with some software.

Additional highlights:

  • Another big announcement, Super Smash Bros. Brawl will be released 3 Decemeber in the United States.
  • The Check Mii Out Channel was announced today.  You can allow other users to vote on for your Mii.
  • Madden NFL 08 for the Wii will allow online multiplayer gaming.
  • Mario Kart Wii will launch Q1 next year and will include online multiplayer racing and battle mode, and comes with a custom Wii Wheel
  • Brain Age 2, which is already more popular than the original in Japan, is coming August 20th (U.S. Release)
  • Super Mario Galaxy - Novemeber 12, 2007 (U.S. Release)
  • My Sims coming to both the Wii and the DS
  • High School Musical for Wii and DS based on the Disney film
  • Flash Focus - a vision training game (already available in Japan) that will go from basic exercises to batting practice

Wii Balance BoardShigeru Miyamoto made an appearance to introduce Wii Fit, a fitness game, that includes over 40 activities and a wireless controller, the Wii Balance Board, that is, in essence, a scale and a balance pad.

In closing Reggie added, 'This is a remarkable time for a remarkable industry,' and that Nintendo's primary target is to 'steal more [leisure] time for video games.' He commented on the numerous social networking sites and interactivity and stated that people insist on getting inside the entertainment with places like flickr and podcasts and that we [humans] are the ultimate interactive experience and the future should belong to all of us.

I think we at Generation: Gamerz would have to agree.
