Generation: Gamerz The Halo 3 Marketing Juggernaut

Microsoft announced today that in North America alone, there have been over 1 million pre-orders placed for Halo 3, making it the fastest-selling pre-order videogame ever, and the game doesn't launch for 47 more days.

The retailers are gushing as their sales continue to grow.  "What we’ve experienced is nothing short of phenomena.  Halo 3 has eclipsed many previous records and will prove to be one of the must-have items of 2007," according to Bob McKenzie, the senior vice president of merchandising at GameStop.  Jill Hamburger, vice president of movies and games at Best Buy, had similar comments, “The excitement for ‘Halo 3’ is incredible.  From our pre-orders online and the buzz we’re hearing in our stores, we know this release is going to be one of the biggest entertainment events of the year. We’re thrilled to be able to bring it to our customers.”

And, as if their isn't enough Halo 3 hype, Microsoft also revealed a number of sponsored promotions for the game's release.  The promotions are from some interesting brand names, including Mountain Dew, 7-Eleven, Pontiac, Comcast and Burger King.

Mountain Dew Game Fuel Can Mountain Dew will unveil the first beverage co-branded with a video game, Mountain Dew Game Fuel, which is supposed to be Mountain Dew with citrus cherry flavor and added caffeine.  Game Fuel will be available nationwide for a limited time starting Aug. 13, 2007.

7-Eleven will have three Halo 3-branded collectible Slurpee cups and will run a promotion with Mountain Dew Game Fuel and Doritos, which will offer "thousands of Halo 3-themed prizes", including the grand prize, a role as a voice actor in the upcoming Halo Wars.

Halo 3 Pontiac G6 GXP ImaginedPontiac will host "Pontiac Gamers Garage events" which will allow gamers to play the game before release.  Also, Pontiac will provide 1,000 consumers with a copy of the game, and "one lucky gamer will win a limited-edition Halo 3 version of its new G6 GXP Streetcar ", the high-performance of the G6.

Burger King will have Halo 3-themed packaging for you to throw out your car windows, and will offer exclusive content on their website beginning September 23.  Comcast has will host exclusive content on its websites GameInvasion.net and Ziddio.com and will offer its cable television customers standard and HD Halo 3 videos on its ON DEMAND service.

Finally, Halo 3 is one of the official sponsors of this summer's Projekt Revolution tour,  headlining bands Linkin Park and My Chemical Romance.  At VIP Halo 3 events on the tour, those in attendance will receive themed merchandise and meet the members of Linkin Park.  Unfortuantely, the events will only take place in select tour cities.

And just to get you excited, today Microsoft/Bungie released the picture below, depicting the four (yes, I said FOUR) playable characters from the game, although they did not specifiy if all the characters will be available in story mode, multiplayer or both.
