Electronic Arts (EA) held a press conference at GC2007 today.  At the event, Alex Rigopulous, the CEO of Harmonix, made a few announcements regarding Rock Band.  The game will be released this fall in North America and the first quarter of 2008 in Europe.  In addition, Europeans will get a PS2 version of the game (it will not be available in the Americas) and songs, both included and downloadable ones, will be localized to specific territories.

Mr. Rigopulous also announced 10 new songs for Rock Band:

Beastie Boys - Sabatoge
The Clash - Should I Stay Or Should I Go
Deep Purple - Highway Star
Faith No More - Epic
Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl
Nine Inch Nails – Hand That Feeds You
OK Go - Here We Go Again
Radiohead - Creep
Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter
Smashing Pumpkins - Cherub Rock

I'm impressed with the number of "newer" songs in this list.  Personally, I hope this is a sign of things to come.  In my opinion, this is where the Guitar Hero franchise has always lacked (until recently with the release of the My Chemical Romance song pack for the Xbox 360 version).  I understand there are plenty of gamers who enjoy the songs from the 60s and 70s, but variety is good, and I welcome it.
