There was only one thing missing when the jump from the last generation of home consoles to the current generation was made: the backwards compatibility. However, now this is about to change for all the owners of Xbox One.

As Microsoft has just reported, the Xbox 360 games will be playable on the new console this holiday season. Mark Ybarra revealed the new characteristics during the latest Microsoft’s E3 press conference. The first old game that we saw running on the new hardware is Mass Effect.

According to Ybarra, the game looks and plays just the way it does on the original hardware, and the multiplayer games will continue to work with gamers playing on the Xbox 360, though with some additional features of Xbox One’s Twitch Streaming and app-snapping.

Considering the above mentioned, it doesn't sound like all the games will be compatible in the beginning. According to Microsoft, 100 games for Xbox One will be available for download by this holiday season, which means that the games need to be ported over manually.

Nevertheless, it doesn’t mean that you’ll have to pay for your games again. Still, it's certain that you can just pop in the disc for any game you already own, and you’ll get the opportunity to download and play the game free of charge.
